Tips for successful viewing:
MacSeason GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING
Some people had obviously problems with getting MS9 running.
Here are some hints at what to do when:
Problem: The program doesn't do anything.
Possible solution:
Try switching channels. The program should display "RESET"
and either change to "Wait for reset" or to "decoding" after
a while. If you don't get the RESET message check the following:
- Is the adapter connected to the right port? You can tell
MS9 which port to use. Simply select "Set Delays..." from
the "Crypt" menu and select the port you want to use.
- If you use the printer port, do you have AppleTalk disabled?
AppleTalk (and similar extensions) doesn't allow free access
to the port which means that videocrypt information doesn't
get through. So turn it OFF.
- Some Mini-8 cables have RxD+ (pin 8) connected to GND (pin 4)
This obviously doesn't work on most Macs. Make sure your
cable has pin 8 connected to nothing at all.
- If you are using a socket on the interface and a normal
Mini 8 cable you are probably using the wrong pins. Does
your cable have 1:1 connections or are some connections
crossed? In the latter case, you will have to swap pins
3 & 5 (RxD- & TxD-) , and also pins 1 & 2 (HSkIn & HSkOut).
Problem: You get a RESET but decoding doesn't work
Possible solutions:
- There might be something wrong with the 7407 (or the BC548,
depending on what you use). A friend of mine had problems
with a standard 7407 while a 74LS07 worked fine. You might
check this out, too.
- BSkyB changed something that caused MacSeason to cease
working. Look out for a new version. (But don't expect
a new version once the new 0A-cards are activated.)
Problem: Sometimes the picture gets scrambled again for
a short time.
Possible Solution:
Your Mac is still too slow, so try to avoid unnecessary things.
- Turn the "Traffic Info"/Debug window off, if it's on
- Turn "Full display" off.
- Turn "Full decoding" off.
- Turn the screen to black & white.
- Turn "Fulltime Mode" on. You won't be able to use your
Mac for anything else simultaneously, though.
Problem: MacSeason9 starts, but immediately exits again.
Possible Solution:
MacSeason tries to open the serial driver, fails and therefore
exits. Try disabling any inits and anything that might use any
of the serial ports. Now start MacSeason again. Hopefully it'll
work now. (I'll have to change this sometimes...)

Additional Tips for MacSeason9:
The timing values are important. You can set them in the "Crypt" menu with
"Set Delays". Some working values can be found below. Mail me with your
reports! and I will add them to the list.
Machine (alphabetical) Timing Decoder Source:
---------------------- ------ ------- -------
Mac Classic 0-38-0 SVA 1 Jörg
Mac IIcx 0-145-0 FT+ Marc
Mac IIfx 0-160-0 FT- Marc
Mac ColorClassic 0-100-0 FT+ SVA 1 Jörg
Mac PowerBook 100 0-100-0 SVA 1 Jörg
Mac PowerBook 520 0-120-0 FT- SVA 1 Jörg
Mac SE/30 0-145-0 FT+ Marc
Abbreviations: FT+ ... Fulltime Mode ON
FT- ... Fulltime Mode OFF
Full decoding mode is needed for NON-SKY channels only. So if you just
watch SKY, turn Full Decoding Mode OFF.
